FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some common questions that are asked of Dr. Law, or about Align Orthodontics in general:

When should my child first see the orthodontist?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that a child gets his or her first orthodontist checkup by age seven. Occasionally, a family dentist or physician recommends that we see a younger child in order to assess them. If you feel unsure about your own child, please call us 876-978-0440 for more information.

Can we put off treating our child?

We cannot make that decision for you, but we strongly recommend you never put off treatment if your child needs it. In doing so, you’ll take a chance of your young one needing extractions or surgery later in life to completely fix their smile. For best results, we recommend that your child has a full evaluation by age 7.

Will my child still be able enjoy the foods and activities they love?

A child who wears braces will need to avoid hard and sticky foods, and they will need to cut fruits and veggies into small pieces.

Will other school kids make fun of my child?

Most kids think braces are “cool.” Your child will fit in just fine.

How long will I need to wear braces?

Most people wear braces for 1-2 years. After you get them off, we fit you with a special retainer that you wear at nights to ensure you keep your best smile.

Will I feel pain?

Braces is mostly painless. You won’t feel pain at your appointments. After we adjust your braces, your mouth may feel a little sore – usually for just for 4 or 5 days. The treatments and care we provide help to reduce pain to a minimum.

Is it true that once you are an adult your teeth don’t move very well?

The truth is, adult teeth move as easily as a child’s. After the teeth have been placed in the best possible position, they may need to be held in position for a longer period of time. This is the purpose of the retainer, which we ask our patients to wear at nights only.

Is orthodontics painful for adults?”

There is no more discomfort for an adult that there is for a child. However, children do have a way of adapting much more quickly than us adults! After some adjustments teeth are “tender” for two to five days and with some people eating “chewy” foods, it is more challenging. With the new titanium wires this tenderness has decreased dramatically.

I have a job where I have a lot of responsibility. Will I have to miss much work?

The answer is “No!” We use high-tech self-ligating braces and wires. Once brackets are placed most adults can be seen once every six to twelve weeks and the wires continue to move teeth. 90% of our patients are finished in 8-12 total appointments (sometimes as few as 6).

Braces are really ugly. Do I have to look like a “metal mouth?

This answer is a resounding 🙂 One option would be braces that fit behind the teeth. We have been installing these for years. These lingual braces are invisible…Additionally, clear ceramic braces are available, which allow for quality treatment and no additional treatment time.

My teeth look okay. Can you really improve my smile?

I find that many times even though teeth are straight, the smile is not as nice as it could be. Smiles are sometimes too narrow and don’t complement the face and lips as well as they should. A typical smile before treatment can be seen here.
